Just the briefest of updated blogs here, BUT it occurred to me that being Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday today, 21st April is indeed a busy date for historical occurrences ( particularly within British Monarchy)!
To kick it all off , this day way back in 753 BC Romulus and Remus discovered Rome ( I would love to have been a fly on the wall for that discovery…. just HOW does one go about stumbling across a major historical and cultural region? It’s amazing what great things can be achieved in mid-argument between brothers!).
Several hundreds of years pass with something rather special occurring almost every April 21st – most notably The Battle of Mutina in 43BC, and The Treaty of St Marten’s Dike in 1420.
Then lo and behold April 21st 1509 Henry VIII becomes King Of England! We all know what happened after that..! ” Off with her head!.”.. ad infinitum.
So far, the general pattern of events leading up to certain death seem to be occurring here for this day in history. However, positive occurrences can also be found from hereon in:
1654, England and Sweden signed their first trade agreement ( there would be no Uk Ikea without it!), 1689 William III and Mary Stuart became King and Queen of England ( obviously a great date for British Royalty this one!), 1759 Spain and Naples -Austria, signed a peace accord and on a positive linguistic note American Lexicographer Noah Webster published the first American English dictionary in 1828.. this is where we get his ‘colorful’ spellings from!
During the 19th and 20th centuries events seem to become sillier and closer in frequency over the years on April 21st.
In 1878 First Lady Lucy Hayes introduced the now much loved tradition of rolling eggs on the White House Lawn for Easter. Then in 1948 the first Polaroid camera was sold in America on this date and in 1956 Elvis Presley’s ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ reached number 1 in the US charts.
Keeping the news well and truly stateside, the last newsworthy event on the global calendar to occur in latter years saw the retirement of the US airforce F-117 Nighthawk in 2008.
Quite a rundown for 2000 years ; and those were just the ones noted!
Wonder what the rest of today will bring… and more importantly, what indeed will Prince Phillip have bought the lady who quite literally already has the crown jewels….hmmm??!
