The Children’s Fab and Funsome Book of British Festivals
Welcome to this promo page introducing my new children’s book! It is a hybrid of factual, fiction and fun!
As the title suggests, this book is aimed to teach children ( aimed at Key stage 2) the history and origin behind all traditional British holidays and festivals. The book covers everything from Christmas and Easter, Guy Fawkes and Halloween, right through to April Fool’s Day and even the humble Bank Holiday.
With two of my 4 children being Key Stage 2 pupils , I’d observed that a lot of their peers had no idea at all why we celebrate or observe many of these events and simply ‘went along’ with it because everyone else does. I thought it would be beneficial to educate them about an intrinsic part of our heritage and also ignite their imaginations with an accompanying story. For smaller readers, I have included quick-fix ‘flash boxes’ with bite-size facts so they can read the gist and hopefully gain some interest for each event. The illustrations throughout are provided by Key stage 2 children from Bristol and North Somerset.
The book began it’s initial stages over four years ago after I had held a Halloween party for our 2 eldest children. As a great fan of all festivals, I’d crafted a spooky black poster with golden scroll writing, outlining the history of Halloween and all the folklore tales surrounding it from centuries gone by. Many of the children’s guests had absolutely no idea that Halloween was in fact not an American custom by origin but began in the UK during Druid times many centuries ago.
Realising that this kind of naivety existed across many of the other holidays and festivals we enjoy, I began to write children’s stories based on each event. Over the last 18 months, I researched the historical facts and more up to date changes we’ve carried out to contemporise some of these holidays.
I am a very strong believer in education and allowing children to make up their own minds from facts presented to them.
Next year, I hope to be featuring at the Hay Literary Festival where I can interact personally with my readers and we can chat about all thoughts and findings!
